I had to try a couple of approaches before finding the solution. Keys auth is awesome! Let alone stuff you can do over SSH.Git for Windows opens bash in the the user profile directory per default and I wanted to change it to the directory with my Github projects instead. By default if you run Linux server you definitely should use keys authentication. Also in other direction if someone will take over one of your machines he will only have one private key which can be easily revoked.

Even if someone takes over your account with stealing password he will not take over your private key.

With password you have to change password in main system and then update all local repositories. With keys you can manage access per device so if you loose your device you can just revoke key. With OpenSSH it went quite quick for me to setup my MacBook, Windows virtual machine, and each Raspberry Pi that I also wanted to share my repositories with. If you are administering multiple systems you want to use public keys anyway.įor GitHub, GitLab, and probably anything else you also have to use OpenSSH keys so adding those can be tiring when you have to convert PuTTY ones. Though you can do that by saving command line for your connection with ssh. Good part is that you can click around in PuTTY interface to setup port forwarding or anything else. PuTTY interface is quite OK if you get used to it, saving sessions and settings is quite dumb and totally not user friendly. Creating those PuTTY format keys is terrible you have to transform those anyway to use it on any remote machine for logging in. Then I got to Git long time ago and somehow I got into GUI for Git because my daily use of console was not that big I liked it. But Windows was my bread and butter all day. I used PuTTY because I was 90% Windows guy, of course I could use Linux without bigger problems, like quitting VIM or setting my own web server or setting up something trivial. Since I got to know that friends don’t let friends use PuTTY on Windows I started to move to use OpenSSH more for my daily Git use and of course instead of using PuTTY I started using OpenSSH on Windows.
